Roman Catholic Conformation... I was 12.

This is when a Catholic makes a conscious choice to be Christian.
Catholics are baptized as babies.
At 12 years old, I was expected to choose to be Christian.
I thought religion was ridiculous.

But I wanted to keep a roof over my head.
Therefore, I went ahead with the Conformation.
There is a slapping of the face in the Conformation ritual.
I had a Cardinal slap my face with an open hand...

I got a noise bleed and ringing in my left ear.
The girls got a gentle tap...
Then we received communion.
Some girls got communion in the hands.

I was not given this luxury.
After the Mass, we walked about the church.
This I suppose showed the neighbors and traffic we were Conformed.
I was a little teary eyed and slightly deaf in the left ear.
This was not a Bar-mitzva.

In a Bar-mitzva the 12-year-old boy becomes a man.
And he reads some scripture...
I felt assaulted by the Cardinal.
I thought I had lost some of my hearing.
I did not feel I had become a man.
