The Beta Read

Not so much about the story today in a sense, it is more about good feedback. I know Steven has been talking much lately about beta readers, so I would like to add my experience to the discussion.

In a nutshell it has been nothing but positive, and here is why. The feedback I have received has prompted me to expand the story adding back in parts I dropped and developing deeper character connection. The result has been the blending of what I thought would be two books into one, and it already reads much better. It was reading well before but now it feels so much better.

If I had not given the work out for a beta read, I would never have been given the push to improve upon the work. Yes, we all hold onto our visions as children but like them they must someday go out into the world.

I hope to finish this blended draft over the next week or two then throw it at my long-suffering friends mad enough to read it, I know you love me Then we shall see what more needs to be done.

For me this process is nothing new, having worked in the music world since I was a teenager mix and song development stages are very much the same. No mix ever happened in one hit no matter what the hype and mystery makers writing about it may say, it is a long process of critical analysis and reworking. The artist in fact needs to be separated from it during parts of the process.

Put the fear aside of criticism it is not actually a bad thing, it helps things grow.
