About This Newsletter "There's hidden sweetness in the stomach's emptiness. We are lutes, no more, no less. If the soundbox is stuffed full of anything, no music. If the brain and belly are burning clean with fasting, every moment a new song comes out of the fire." Mevlana Jelaluddin Rumi Letter From the Editor This time of year Baha'is, across the planet are practicing intermittent fasting. For nineteen days, Baha'is between 15 and 70, who are in good health, fast between sunrise and sunset. They get up before sunrise to have breakfast and wait until after sunset to have their next meal. During the day, rather than eating, they say the prayers revealed for the Nineteen-Day Fast. According to scientific studies, intermittent fasting has several physical benefits. For a Baha'i, the physical benefits are secondary to the spiritual benefits. One of the spiritual benefits of fasting is to bring the individual closer to God by giving them a period to refresh and reinvigorate their souls. Due to age and medication, I am no longer required to fast. Instead, I attempt to reinvigorate and refresh my soul by saying and meditating on the fast prayers. This gives me a chance to relieve the stress of daily living and allows me to pause and listen to my intuition. Do you practice intermittent fasting? If so, is it a part of your spiritual path or do you fast simply for the physical benefits? What type of intermittent fasting do you practice? Do you fast for alternate days? Do you eat a regular meal five days a week and fast two? Is your fasting restricted to a specific period each day? Editors Picks
