Surely they meant something

People's faces
Once vibrant with joy
Now forgotten
in the cold abyss

The lovely notes
of piano playing
stilled in the hands
that no longer remember

Do I enjoy the food I eat?
I do not recall
I only go through the motions
Needing nourishment to survive

Day after day, ever the same
all is done by rote
Gone is the person I once was
What lingers is only a shell
