Dad's memory of marching for Independence
Today is Independence Day.
I recall my Dad's story - when he was in the second grade and the British were still ruling India. The kids were taken by their teacher to march ont he streets chanting 'We Want independence".
Dad wasn't in an English Medium school, so he hadn't got to the word 'Independence' yet, and nobody in the class knew what that meant.
In those days ink pens (fountain pens) were called Indipens and the kids coveted those.
So they thought the teacher was asking the British to buy them pens, and took to the streets with gusto, yelling "We Want Indipens!"
