Elephant in my Bed
Exhaustion trumpets, filling my head with fuzz,
Heavy steps thump in time with my heart.
Ever closer it moves, oversized gray beast,
Crashing through my carefully laid plans
With ominous blurry eyes and heavy lids.
I work against it, tapping words out like Morse code,
until it sits on my chest, knocking me flat.
Next morning I wake up lying on my iPad
Wondering where my earbuds went.
Oh well…
Better to conk out, doing something productive
Than to waste irrevocable nights sloshed,
or whatever normal people do for fun
When they're supposed to be sleeping.
