Letter from the editor

~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~

I like light-heartedness and humor, dashed with eccentricity. I try to reflect this in my newsletters and still appeal to the general public. But this month a different, and more serious topic is on my mind:
Diversity.

Diversity in itself is a good thing. Imagine how drab the world would be if there were only one type of flower or breakfast cereal to choose from. Or perhaps one type of personality in people, or one type of ethnic origin.

Diversity is what makes each living (and non-living) thing unique. Whether one likes it or not, we are all unique. There are no two of us alike, even if you are a twin.

Diversity does not have to mean division. Unfortunately, many times it leads to that. People make judgments because of skin color, body types and conditions, clothing, hair styles, and whether or not the person smiles enough. If we can see it, we can make a judgment, whether positive or negative.

But how often are these judgments unfair, unjust and frankly…wrong? We’ve all heard the phrase, “you can’t judge a book by its cover,” and as writers understand that. I think it’s time to take that phrase and apply it to our lives. Judging people by outward appearances can be down right dangerous, and many time leads to harm.

Yes, we should all use common sense. But in our day to day lives…do we avoid sitting in that empty seat on the bus, just because that person has a different skin color, is overweight or physically challenged? I challenge us all (myself included) to branch out, embrace diversity as a natural part of life, and not only sit by that person, but say “hello” as well.

I also challenge us all to begin to include diversity in our writing. We live in a colorful world! Introduce a character of a different race, religion, or culture. This might take some research, but will most likely make your story more three dimensional.

If that’s too much of a challenge, why not try looking at some of the diverse generes! Don’t stick to reading only comedy or mystery…branch out into the world of sci-fi, fantasy, or action! Perhaps try your eyes on some romance. Only read poetry? How about reading some of the excellent short stories or novels? There are also a ton of interactives, so you can participate in other ways! As always, when rating and reviewing, constructive, not destructive, criticism is encouraged.

Speaking of diversity…Writing.Com is full of it. Proof is below…embrace!
