From poetry and stories to creative polls and interactives, we'll bring you a wide variety of items to enjoy. We will also feature "how to" advice and items that will help to jump start the creation process on Writing.com We hope all members of the site will take the time to read, rate, review and welcome our new authors. Self Confidence Do you ever doubt your abilities as a writer? Do you become discouraged and wonder why you keep writing? Many of us require constant assurance that our work is good. We need the praise of our families and friends to boost our confidence back up when it slips, and it will slip. While it is natural and important to need praise, you must develop motivation within yourself and work to build your self-confidence. Remind yourself that you can improve your writing skills, that few are born good writers. You've made the first step into writing by posting your work for the public to read. Doing that takes a mountain of courage. Apprehensions may have developed because others were critical of your work or perhaps you were too critical of yourself. Maybe someone told you to scrap everything except that one great sentence or scene. No one but another writer truly understands the amount of effort and time you’ve invested, or the tears and emotion wrung from your being. Most of your reviewers are writers; they are not harsh. We all need recognition and praise to keep from giving up. Where do we get it? Readers can’t give it until the book is published. Reviewers give it...along with the criticisms necessary to get it ready to be submitted to a publisher. The one best to give you praise along the way is you. You will need this commitment, especially when you feel discouraged or frustrated by the comments of reviewers. Taking pride in your achievements is the best thing you can do to build confidence. Instead of focusing on the negatives, take a moment to congratulate yourself for that particularly fine descriptive scene you wrote, or that wonderful character only you could have created. Praise yourself for being able to enjoy your work. Writing well is hard work; it takes a lot of practice. Use a journal, and write in it every day. Write about anything and everything. Write as if you’re writing a letter to a friend. When you write a friend to share something, you are careful to include every detail because you want him to see and feel it the same way you did. Write your drafts the same way. When you start tweaking and fiddling as you go, you lose your voice and the story quickly dies. Do you remember the scene I mentioned awhile ago? Read it again out loud. I bet it sounded like you, didn’t it? It was written naturally...exactly as you thought it in your head, in your speaking voice. That’s why it was so good. Sure, there are rules to follow, and you will follow them when you start revising; but for now, just write the short story, poem, paragraph or novel as it appears in your mind. Write for the joy of writing, only to please yourself. Your writing will reflect the pleasure you’re taking, and you’ll be amazed at the confidence you gain. It is that confidence which will soon become evident in the quality of work you churn out.
