Through my church, I'm taking what's called "Disciple". It's a 34 week intense Bible study course. I signed up because I know so little about it, and reading it on my own wasn't having the impact I knew I needed. Every week has a particular theme and every day during the week we have to read certain chapters based on that theme. The last two were Order and Atonement. I have to admit my eyes glazed over while reading the portions about how to properly sacrifice in the tabernacle, what sort of sacrifice applies to which sin, etc, etc. But the last day talked about the importance of observing not just the Sabbath, but all the festivals such as Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Passover, Pentecost . . . if you've read the article I linked in my previous entry, this should begin to sound familiar. I finished reading Stormy's documentary after I came home from our weekly get-together to discuss what we had read, and I suddenly realized how much I, as a Christian, am missing out on much of my own ancestral and spiritual history. It seems many Christians, focusing so much of our energy on our own, more recently established holidays, such as Christmas and Easter, we ignore or give only passing mention to the very festivals God had established many thousands of years ago for His people to observe. Jesus asks us to follow Him. That means not just following God’s commandments, but to live as He lived. Jesus was a Jew and observed all Jewish customs as was expected. Why are we not doing the same? |
