An unworthy request
Is there such a thing as an unworthy or trivial prayer?

Apparently, yes, there is, as I discovered today. Every Sunday, the Disciple class meets to discuss our weekly reading, and at the end we put in prayer requests for the week. In the ten weeks since this class began, I’ve asked twice, neither one for me.

I’ve always been leery of asking for prayers. For some reason, it feels selfish, that there are so many others who need prayers way more than I do.

But I figured tonight, everyone else has asked for things for themselves, why not me? So when the facilitator of the class asked for prayer requests, I piped up and said, “I’m tired of being sick.”

One of the ladies answered back with, “Oh, you’ll get over it.”

Uh, huh. So I was right all along. Asking for prayers for myself is selfish, and asking that my cold to end sooner rather than later is trivial and unworthy of not only their time, but mine and God’s.

So that whole thing about taking everything to God in prayer is all bunk.

That’s good to know.
