BURY ME DEEP
BURY ME DEEP

[A beggar’s last wish]

I was the scum of the earth,
All hated me, none loved.
Now that I rid you of me,
I beg you only this:
Bury me deep.

Why take a chance that one day,
I, or my ugly ghost,
May yet come out and scare you?
You better preempt this:
Bury me deep.

No more shall I ask you now
To give me food or clothes,
Or shelter from biting cold;
I will not them now need.
Bury me deep.

For me not a coffin, nor
An epitaph for me;
No service of condolence,
No candles or roses.
Bury me deep.
