The Day After

The storm knocked out the town's power, last night, but left most trees and roofs intact. Even the town hall, where the townsfolk now sat gathered, stood untouched.

Life would have been returning to normal. If not for one strange occurrence.

Sheriff Jared trudged up to the podium centered on the town hall's stage.

Mayor Williamson stood. "You found any, this time?" His voice cracked as he spoke.

"They're gone," Jared announced, his words heavy with disbelief and resignation. "Our pets...our livestock...even the crows."

"Something evil has come," Reverend Hatchings proclaimed.

And for once, all the townsfolk agreed.
