THE PROUD MAN: a sonnet


Is man superior to animals?
Are animals inferior to him?
On going through evolution’s annals,
Such thoughts are nothing but the proud man’s whim.

Real superiority lies in
The power to defeat adversity.
On this count cockroach would easily win.
It has survived too much calamity.

The man on the other hand so quickly
Is destroying himself and mother earth,
And causing much pollution so freely
That one does doubt his ecologic worth.

Man, be not proud that He will favour you.
The creator has other creatures too.



' Cockroaches are an enormously ancient and successful group of insects. The roaches were one of the very first terrestrial insects, appearing during the early Carboniferous era some 280 million years ago.
