The Effort

It is the effort itself,
the choice not to walk out the door
more then the action of walking.

It is the letting someone else
make the decision for me;
rather than making the decision itself.

It is the effort not to remember
rather than the memory of pain
that drives the mind out of sanity.

It is the effort of fearing
rather than fear itself
that paralyzes the mind
and mutates the soul.

It is the effort not to love,
rather than the loving itself
that wears the lover out
and prevents forgiveness of sin.
