THUNDERSTORM Ggazing, sad, across meadows, Watching rivulets meet, To form a mighty river, I live memories sweet. Time has flown, yet those moments Are engraved in my heart, When in a divine moment, We took vows not to part. That evening was like this and While the shadows darkened, Our hearts glowed as skies thundered And the lightning threatened. This evening, though similar, Is differently destined. While shadows darken, I sit Alone, my eyes moistened. The storm in my mind rages, While the outer won’t stop, Memories pound on my heart Like raindrops on rooftop. • Written in abcb, 7-6-7-6 format • Awarded First prize in the contest “Lined Up!!!”, "Invalid Item" M C Gupta 6 April 2006 ******************** NOTE— The above is the slightly modified version of the original submitted to the contest. As per prompt rules, a poem had to be written using the following 2 lines without any alteration: Sadly gazing across the meadows, The rain pounding on the rooftop. Since the above lines have 9 and 8 syllables respectively, the poem as submitted was written in 9-8-9-8 format. However, I found that pretty awkward and have, hence, changed to the 7-6-7-6 version given above. ORIGINAL VERSION Sadly gazing across the meadows, As small rivulets flow and meet, To form a mighty raging river, I sit lost in memories sweet. Though time has flown by me, those moments Are etched forever in my heart. In a moment unforgettable, Both of us took vows not to part. That evening was like this also, but, With the darkening of shadows, Our hearts glowed more and more with love as The skies thundered with lightning throes. This evening, too, is similar, yet, Differently it is destined. As shadows darken, I sit alone In my chair, my old eyes moistened. As a storm rages inside my mind, The outer not going to stop, The memories pound on my heart like The rain pounding on the rooftop. |
