SPRING: 12 Jamál (9 May) Salmon Weather where I am: 72º Weather in Buffalo, NY: 72º Weather in Oslo, Norway: 73º Finally, Scandinavia is experiencing Spring. I checked the temp in Missoula (46º) and Mongolia {27º in Ulan Baator} and decided that today it would be better to be in Norway. Death of young people It is always hard when someone young dies. Martina Delaney was only 17 when she died in a crash last night. Although I didn't know her well (I remember this child with carrot hair), I've known her whole family for years. As people we are affected by the tragedies and sorrows of those who are important in our life. Community is merely extended family, like thread of a tapestry, connected to each other. When we pull the wrong thread of a knitted item it unravels (dogs are particularly good at this). Since my blog is read by family and friends, this is the very short article in the newspaper: http://www.buffalonews.com/editorial/20060509/3052308.asp Maybe it's because I ate fish chowder last night, but I looked up coral and salmon today. Both are reddish colors, with coral being more orange and salmon more pink. From Wikipedia: Salmon is a pale pink-red color, named after the color of salmon flesh. Actual salmon color varies from almost white to deep red, depending on their levels of the carotenoid astaxanthin due to a rich diet in krill and shrimp. The widely-accepted color "salmon" is on the lighter rather than the darker side of this range. It became an official Crayola color in 1949. For a good dose of salmon color: http://users.rcn.com/giant.interport/COLOR/SALMON.html IMAGES The line snakes down the hall past the Ladies room; old wet sneakers squeak. Round tables wait with syrup, butter. We move forward for pancakes, chatter about nothing. A noisy street sweeper roams the parking lot. Alleys wet from the morning rain mirror the noisome threat from grey above. Two for one at La Prima Tazza! Sumatran will do for me. Scabble is played at a table for two. The committee goes round and round. They speak in circles. Next year will it be the same voices? the same old shit? Rice overreacts? There is a controversy simmering over Rice's outright dismissal of a letter to Bush from Ahmadinejad. My first reaction was "how arrogant" can Washington get? It is not that I've been an admirer of Iran's government all these miserable years, but I've known too many refugees from there to think the culture or people can be stereotyped as many would care to have us believe. It may be that (God forbid) the Iranian people and leaders have something in common with those who are not enamored with the present American leadership. In any case this is a link to a translation of that letter: http://hosted.ap.org/specials/interactives/_documents/ahmadinejad0509.pdf Sketched September 22, 2003 and edited today: At dusk the rabbits scurry And the breeze boldens, gathers itself. It russles a leaf or two, airs out the blanketing hush. What stir of wind now disturbs the land, now speaks to the hidden stars? At dusk rabbits scurry. They say good-bye to Summer, rush through blanketing warmth. Before the break of storms, the sweep of leaves from twigs, of naked broomsticks raised to sky, they pray to the hidden stars.
