I have been using AutoCAD (Computer Aided Drafting) since 1991. What I love most about it is how I can create 3-dimensional objects in actual size, using as much detail as I want down to the smallest nuts and bolts. I can then add colors, materials and the like, and then render them complete with lighting and shadows.
When my mom started her paintings, she hired me to draw the Mystery Science Theatre 3000 characters in 3D and send her specific views in jpeg or tiff format. That way she could trace over the graphics I sent her to give her a better idea of proportion and perspective as she added them to her paintings.
Drawing the characters took me almost two months, but here are they are:
