FESTIVE LIGHTS
FESTIVE LIGHTS

As I see those festive lights
And listen to carols,
I tarry along the street.
My shoes are full of holes.

Holes gape not only in shoes,
But also, in my heart.
I don’t know where life will end,
Nor where did it all start.

I am an orphan, with none
To give me Christmas cake.
I am the scum of the world,
A veneer, a mere fake.

I have never touched, though I
Have seen a Christmas tree.
I am poverty’s slave, though
I’m a citizen free.
