JULUCA: a sonnet
JULUCA: a sonnet
For months have I been out on my errand,
With my faithful horse as my company.
And now at mountain cliff alone I stand,
And Lo! I see there something quite funny.
As I look DOWN the clouds and heavy mist,
I see a rainbow in its full colours.
I’m thrilled, surprised at nature’s wonder twist,
Though rainbows I have seen many others.
For this I have but one explanation:
Surely it’s Juluca, the Rainbow God.
It’s just His way of guarding our nation
Against the white invaders’ blatant fraud.
I bow to you Juluca, have mercy.
Let’s independence from encroachers see.
* Juluca is the Arawak Indian name for the Rainbow God of Anguilla
