Storming the Gate
At certain times I've been pressured to defend my work, to explain the content or the experiences that may have inspired it. In nearly every instance, I've refused. What I write and why I write it is a personal and private as anything else to me. There are rooms in my house I will never show anyone, why should I? Its not about being deliberately mysterious, but rather about maintaining my identity, my sense of self. If I worried about how something I was writing was going to affect one reader or another, I dilute the process and in most cases, the very point of writing it in the first place. This sentiment does not always go over well, particularily if the piece is very emotional, relating to a past love, about an experience that is still raw. Its difficult to stand my ground sometimes, especially when sharing or explaining something might make the other people feel better. But there are some things a writer should never compromise I guess, even if its hard at times.
