March 16th Prompt: Pet Peeves
Don't ask

The thing that gets me going
Really gets my goat
When someone calls my house
And the following I’ll quote

“Hello?” I say

“Hello?” they say

“Yes?” I say

“Who is this?” they say

It makes me want to scream
How can they not see?
I didn’t dial their number
They are the ones calling me!

Once those words are spoken
And I feel myself tense
I wait a moment and relax
to forgive of this offense

“Who are you calling for?” I ask

“Well, who is this?” they ask

With this reply there’s no going back
My voice has lost its luster
My final words to this call

“You called me, don’t ask who I am,
Just state your name, buster!”

What I’d really like to do
To end this frustrating discussion
Is take the receiver to the cradle
And slam! Listen to that percussion!

Author's Note: OK, so I don't really don't do those things, BUT I do think it is rude when someone calls your house and then ask who you are. Maybe I find these calls irritating only because they are never for me. :) House full of people, half of them don't live there, and they receive all the phone calls!
