I have an itch. Not that kind of itch, mind you – nothing I wouldn’t scratch in public anyway. I have a writer’s itch. My fingers want to move, but my brain can’t think of any activity to give them. Except to write about how I have nothing to write about. Well, that’s not true. I do have a little something. Ellen, one of my coworkers is an artist. You can find her stuff at http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5075013 I turned to her this morning and asked, “Do you ever have the desire to draw, but can’t think of a thing to draw?” “Absolutely!” she said. “Frustrating, isn’t it?” She agreed and went on to describe how for twelve years, she felt that way. She at first blamed it on being in the military, but now she’s not so sure. Still during that time, though she had the need and even drew some, nothing she made turned out right. Between 1½ - 2 years after she left the army it was like the bottle became uncorked. Not only does she continue to draw, but she’s pleased with the results more often than not. Don’t you love listening to others talk about their passion? She’s happy when she draws because it releases that bottled up energy inside her that can come out no other way. Because I asked her that question, now me and my fingers are happy (well, for now anyway. Writing can be one hell of an itch!). Like Ellen, my energy cannot be released until I write.
