Our laws

We

bound by laws
of water
gravity
heat lovers
givers of heat to others
hereby bestow upon this universe:
our grief

We
poor carbon cousins
weak organic bonds
a waste of hydrogen, oxygen
that lusts to multiply beyond the stars
so far

How far
shall we extend this cruel insanity
impose upon those unknown entities
that laugh
without hydrated hosts
fly
without the weight of gravity
love
albeit hot or cold

Robinson Park on Memorial Day: 4 benches (2 wood, 2 stone); 2 rabbits; 2 doves; 1 cannon (1863) aimed at the bridge that spans the Kaw; some black and yellow bird, an oriole?; a butterfly; a mast without a flag; a brick-brown rock with the names of those who came to settle here in 1854; pine cones beneath my feet; one sprig of lilac; a sense of abandonment; 1st time here this year, probably my last; carved on the bench: Neva + Gary = love 4ever.

MORNING THOUGHTS:

Water becomes ice becomes water. What a life to be constantly trasformed by sun and cold! Make of me a pond, an ever-changing face at Winter's dawn.

The fragrance of honeysuckle lures me to pick it. The sight of three green leaves warns me to leave it alone. Down the tunnel of moist green branches, I'm taken back to Costa Rica. At the end of the 'tropical' path, I pick honeysuckle that is not protected by the poison ivy and put it in my pocket.
