Out My Window

Lonely car on County Home Road
City truck in the neighborhood, mist following,
Sprays for mosquitos but not the gnats
That fly through the holes in the screen

Shades of green and brown in the front yard
Covering the sloped, uneven ground
Wide sidewalk a bordering pale-gray ribbon
To the tarrred-and-gravelled street beside

Across the street new neighbors build
A house to block my view
Of the little baseball diamond
Out beyond the main road

The neighborhood still has many empty lots
Peppered here and there
Betwen them I see the fields
Planted in corn already tassled, not beans this year.

Spot, the black and white neighborhood cat, stalks
What looks to be a Box Turtle
Must have crawled up from the rain-soaked river
Not a quarter mile away

Here I sit looking southward
Out the home office window
Waiting for my husband
To get home in time for dinner
