A brief preface...
First of all, I would like to thank my anonymous sponser(s)! If it wasn't for you this story would have never been seen by the public so I give you my deepest gratitude!

I started writing When Darkness Falls about 5 years ago in 6th grade.  This work, particularlly the beginning, is majorly influenced by the Inheritance Series (Eragon and Eldest), the Elfstones of Shanara and the Sword of Shanara, and Lord of the Rings.  My inspiration for this story was two poems a wrote with a gap of about 2 months between them. They are as follows:

Poem 1:
Through the haze and the mist,
Through the forest green light,
Lay there an egg that must be sorely missed.

The egg was like no other
Like glass made liquid;
Wind made solid.
What could be such a things own mother?

And then it came to me,
And then it hit:
This egg was a dragon's!
I must think and sit

What to do with a thing so precious?
Shall I leave it here?
Shall I keep it for me?

Why should I care?
It does not belong to me.

And yet I find myself stooping down to take it.
As I touch it lights before my eyes are lit:

I see a great and mighty war
Of great power,
Of old lore.

And then I see myself far above it all
Me on a dragon
Racing from dawn.

And now I'm back
In the mist and the fog
I carefully pick up the egg like its worth my life
Place it on my knee and ride off into the night.

Poem 2:
Off in the night where terror filled
My people and I are faced with a plight...

They are coming.

"Women and children! to the back of the caves!"
My father said this on the last of his days.

A screech and a roar;
All fell to the floor;
The mighty dragon of elven lore.

The archers at ready
The soldiers at arms
Dragon swoops down on the wings of a storm.

Black arrows in the night
Shot at us from below
The dragons brought a host
Of 10,000 or more

"Run!" says my father
"Flee for your life!
I can't watch you die!
Not this night!"

So were his orders to me as i watched the wall breached
My father then faltered and fell to his knees

"Go!" were his last words I heard
"Take care of the Kounthar."
His last words were slurred.

"No! It cannot happen! The walls can't be breached!"
The world went black,
Its the last thing I saw
Then I wake and to my horror
Enemies filled my eyes.

The elven army was lost
No longer in this world
They left without me.
And then my anger unfurled.

What of the Kounthar?
What of it?
Did they take it with them
And leave me like this?

Enemies alert at my sudden movement
Looked down on me,
I felt translucent

Up cantered the warlord
On his mighty steed
I looked in his eyes
Who could do such a deed?

He spoke in a tongue foreign to me
Then he pushed me down
To bow on one knee

Treachery! Vicious snake!
He would pay for this!
Make no mistake!

Off they carried me to a secluded tree
And lashed me up so that i could not flee.

There they left me for a night and a day
Then on we moved
Not a single man stayed

At dawn I was taken to kneel by a stump
I laid my head there and looked at the sun

As he swung his axe
I saw something there
The Kounthar had hatched
And I was saved

A mighty roar filled the sky
The men all quaked
As they watched it fly

"Come to me my Mighty friend!"
Together we will see through the end!"

And so came my vision as I rode through the skies
Me and my dragon,
The battle down below
"I am Arya! Flee from my bow!"
