One egg, one slice of toast, the chickens to feed once the cat's been given milk. She sips in the morning. The tea kettle's whistling and across the frozen yard there is nothing to see: just two doves searching the gravel, a cardinal flashing red at the feeder, three crow passing by. And there's nothing to do: the crossword's done and the afghan squares need just a stitch or two. Kyle will come by today to pick up the pies she baked yesterday; and, Lyle will stop in to bring her the gossip and the new crossword puzzle. Like always, he'll have plenty to say. She listens to the sound of the day. There is nothing to hear.
