Kenya: Are Humans and Lions Superior to Zebras?
Kenya's Amboseli National Park has undergone severe drought, its worst in 26 years, resulting in a loss of 80% of its herbivores-plant eaters. The result is impending starvation for the carnivores-meat eaters including lions and hyenas-due to loss of available prey. So the Kenya Wildlife Service is trucking in zebras as carnivore food.
Is this transport of 4K zebras now, and later after calving, 3K wildebeest, from four locations out of pity for the starving meat-eaters? No-it's due to threats of villagers-many of whom lost livestock first from the drought and subsequently from lion predation-to kill surviving lions, whose population is now only about 2K in number-AND because lions are the NUMBER ONE TOURIST ATTRACTION in Kenya.
