I think it has to be true that a good character is higher than a good intellect. An excellent human character contains love while the intellect tries to come to correct conclusions, it takes a cold hard look at things. There is more diversity in character than intellect because it not only has the logic element but a deep emotional one too.

Perhaps our purpose here on this earth is to become greater souls than we already are, to learn from our repetitive mistakes and thoughts and become something better than we are, achieved by constant, conscious effort.
