Childhood's lessons
return to haunt
and reverberate
like a bully's taunt.

Which of these lessons
have stuck with me
the good,
the bad,
or the ugly?

It was the lie
that a neighbor girl told
that resulted in the spanking
I did not deserve
and the unconscious belief
that no one ever
believes me.

Why is it
I remember the lessons
that were ugly
or bad
before I remember the good?
