Not to put a premium on ignorance, as my pastor often says. But "Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up." (1 Corinthians 8:1) I realize the original context of the verse concerns things offered to idols, but we also must realize that a lot of people, including some Christians, have made the pursuit of knowledge into an idol. Please note the following definition of knowledge in this verse: Transliteration: gnosis {gno'-sis} Word Origin: from 1097 TDNT: 1:689,119 Part of Speech: noun feminine Usage in the KJV: knowledge 28, science 1 Total: 29 Definition: knowledge signifies in general intelligence, understanding the general knowledge of Christian religion the deeper more perfect and enlarged knowledge of this religion, such as belongs to the more advanced esp. of things lawful and unlawful for Christians moral wisdom, such as is seen in right living For Synonyms see entry 5826 TDNT - Theological Dictionary of the New Testament Although it is good to sharpen ourselves with the Word to have sound biblical doctrine, we can go overboard on it sometimes and educate ourselves into ignorance. Not to accuse anyone with this scripture, but I agree we mustn't educate ourselves into ignorance as to not "speaking the truth IN LOVE," so as to avoid making knowledge an idol.
