Not Guilty
Not Guilty
I used to wrap myself in indulgences,
hiding as I dared to gain pleasure
from what others said
were frivolous or a waste of time.
Insignificant moments
to assuage feelings of inadequacy,
of never being good enough.
Metamorphosis metastasized. I burst
from protective cocoon, wet-winged, hesitant:
An imperial, at last, finding the sun,
using hot air blown my way to dry, to fly.
To flit from one pleasure to another;
so much to partake of, to experience,
to dive into, splash through
with unconcerned abandon.
I partake of what entices me.
Shedding guilt like dirty laundry
I no longer choose to wear, last year’s
fine feathers discarded. I fly phoenix-like
rising from the ashes of the burned.
No guilt. No shame.
Case closed.
