Zombie-The
Cranberries
Zombie sang by
The Cranberries, was released in 1994 as the lead single from the
album, 'No Need to Argue.' The song was written by Dolores
O'Riordan, the singer of the band and the song reached No 1 on the
charts in Australia, Denmark, Belgium, and Germany. As of January
2015, it has been viewed over 200 million times on YouTube and the
number continues to rise. Zombie created a displacement by reference
to the 1916 Easter Rising, which was bizarre for a pop group to refer
to events before the time of their target audience.
Lead
singer Delores O'Riordan claimed that 'Zombie' speaks about,
"The Irish fight for independence that seems to last forever."
The lyrics even say, "It's the same old theme since 1916."
Like the responsive works of Yeats, Heaney, and U2, the Cranberries
claim they wrote 'Zombie' to be a "Song of peace, peace among
England and Ireland." Interestingly, on August 1994, a few weeks
after this song was released the IRA (The Irish Republican Army)
declared a ceasefire after 25 years of conflict, leading some critics
to believe they stopped because they did not want any more songs
written about them.
I have always
loved this song because it tells the story about the truth about war
and it is also sad that the type of violence people go through.
Another
mother's breakin' Heart is taking over When the violence causes
silence, We must be mistaken.
The words in this
verse are loud with emotions in the meaning that we must be making a
mistake in continuing the war. I like how the Cranberries had the
courage to write and perform a song which has touched many people all
over the world which still rings true today.
"Zombie"
Another
head hangs lowly, Child is slowly taken. And the violence
caused such silence. Who are we mistaken?
But you see, it's
not me, it's not my family. In your head, in your head they are
fighting, With their tanks and their bombs, And their bombs and
their guns. In your head, in your head, they are crying...
In
your head, in your head, Zombie, zombie, zombie, Hey, hey, hey.
What's in your head, In your head, Zombie, zombie, zombie? Hey,
hey, hey, hey, oh, dou, dou, dou, dou, dou...
Another mother's
breakin' Heart is taking over When the violence causes
silence, We must be mistaken.
It's the same old theme since
nineteen-sixteen. In your head, in your head they're still
fighting, With their tanks and their bombs, And their bombs and
their guns. In your head, in your head, they are dying...
In
your head, in your head, Zombie, zombie, zombie, Hey, hey, hey.
What's in your head, In your head, Zombie, zombie, zombie? Hey,
hey, hey, hey, oh, oh, oh, Oh, oh, oh, oh, hey, oh, ya, ya-a...
