Despondent Daffodil
A little despondent daffodil,
stands in the field--
waiting for the first snow of the season.
All her partners have moved on--
the laughing neighbour,
the morose distant cousins,
and the wise drooping grandmother--
each one of them
to a better life, she hopes.
Even the hooting owl has left her
for the warmer pastures of the world.
She still tries to give the joy
to all the passer-bys who cares to stand still.
But like the days of the winter,
the time of the people has also shortened.
Like the wax candle of the far off window,
her time to smile has diminished too.
She is nearing her sleep,
as is her time to create.
Like her friends and family,
she is ready to pass on
her legacy to a newer world.
Soon the blanket of snow will come,
and a little kid with icepick
will find her during a game,
dusting the world with life again
a new bud will be ready to start.
