Spirit Knows

Every decade one of us is sent to visit Earth. We spent days scoping out the darkness that has taken over. It was many many moons ago when we, the children of Mother Earth were banished. Taken over by humans that instilled new modern tactics for a new revolution. It took time but eventually it has reached this very moment when the smog took over hiding anything that was vibrant. What was green was now grey and crisp. The skies were thick and you could taste it's sulfur in your throat. A green haze when mingled with the few rays of sunlight made it worse for focusing leaving you to rub your eyes from irritation. This was the worst it's ever been.

“Children, from what I see there is no choice but to take action. We have to take over Earth again and try to bring back it's natural beauty. If this keeps up everything will be destroyed, even us. Man has taken a step beyond recognition. It is paramount that you follow my command.”

Gweneth was the only one who would question Mother and she had no qualms if things became heated in discussion. “Where on Earth are we supposed to start Mother? We have no power on Earth. The oceans are dry, the air is filth, earth itself is no long umber but charcoal and fire is only used to create smog. I just don't see how...”

“Listen my dear. I know this seems like a no end situation but I know a secret. A secret I have kept for this moment in time. I knew many moons ago how things could play out from this end. Let me tell you, that man has been destructive and they might have thought they were clever but not clever enough. I want the four of you to enter the orb of spirits. In that orb you will find different creatures that hold many powers. There is a source of elements that men could not defeat. With their help we can take back what we own.”

All four girls looked at each other with confusion. “A secret Mother? Really? Why have you held this for so long?”

“I couldn't tell you because I was afraid you would misuse it and it needs to be done with great care. I hope you understand. You each hold a very important role in this matter and if one of you strays alone, well it would be very bad. You need to work together in order for things to fall into place. Fire alone would wipe out the earth, water alone would drown out any hope, air is critical for growth; so you see why now? Let's get to work and make things right.”

Mother showed us a place in the world that held a wonderful gift. Never acknowledged by man as of yet. We would have to enter it in fairy form, to stay hidden and to be excepted by the keepers of the orb. The flutter of wings and our dashing outfits made our mission that more magical and fun. We knew our job was serious but we had to be light about it or the pressure could take over and wreak havoc, undoing what we are set out to do.

Once we reached our destination we could see this orb pulsating with the whitest light. It was settled between the little bit of water left in the world and the sky. It was nestled in a bay surrounded by lush trees, twinkling stars and flowers. We haven't seen flowers in so long it was breath taking. We had to wonder how man couldn't be aware of this piece of paradise.

There were two words that Mother told us to use when we reached the orb. We were to whisper it three times before it would be known who we are. “Are you guys ready?”
“When you are.” We grasped each others hand and squeezed while our wings fluttered to keep us in one spot. We closed our eyes and held our faces towards the sky so Mother could see us.

Before we could open our eyes we were lifted into the air by an energy from beyond. We couldn't really see anything or feel anything. Above the orb was a small hole that virtually opened like a blooming flower. We were dropped into it but not harshly more like handed down gently. We wanted to look everywhere and soak in the magic of this whole secret that Mother told us about. There really wasn't any time. Before we could blink twice our little fairy feet landed on the most vibrant green grass we have ever known. Inside this orb was colours of spring, summer and fall all at once. The sound of rushing water and the cleanest air that held scents of pure verdant heaven.

“Welcome.”

“Who said that?” There was nobody there, yet the voice was strong.

“I am the spirit that knows. I am the secret to Earth. I hold the majestic power to bring back what has been taken.”

“Umm, spirit, sir? Why can't we see you? Why has Mother sent us here?”

“You are the children of the Earth. You each hold an element of what Earth needs to replenish it's beauty. I am here to help you do that. Without me you could not do this on your own.”

“Well let's do it then.” We were all excited in knowing that we held so much power. We all giggled in delight, but shortly cut off.

“Enough! This is no joke and it isn't a joy ride. Things are going to happen. Things that will change the world for ever. What we hold is more than power and if it is done wrong, Earth could be ruined for eternity.”

“Yes sir. We will do exactly as you say. We are ready to see the world in it's rightful order.”

“Good now let's begin. We are going to chant and we are going to do it for a long time. Within a period of time you are going to feel your own elements inside of yourselves. This will be hard for each of you but you must release each slowly and bring balance. Place your hands on the stone in front of you and mediate. Listen to only the sounds around you. Soak in the power that I give you and on my command I will start, then you will join me. Say exactly as I say.”

Everything was still. Nothing but the sounds of water, birds, rain, wind, rustling of trees and all the animals the world should keep safely. Everything the world should be was right here in this one orb. We felt the transition from being fairies to being something so much more.

“Earth Grows”
“Fire Glows”
“Air Blows”
“Water Flows”

In turn we chanted and held our own, standing in the same spot which seemed to be forever. Then one by one we could feel our element rising out of us. The wind picked up making it so hard to hold on, the water started to rush and we felt our feet beneath waves, we could smell new growth as though it was the first time to ever witness anything new, then the heat of the flames that crept around us but never touched us grew higher and higher , hotter and hotter, like a tornado the winds picked up and the thunder roared, the earth was shaking, the orb was breaking!

None of us knew what had happened. The orb was gone and we were left as fairies on the leaf of the biggest tree we had ever seen. The sun was pure and bright almost blinding but not too hot. The ground was lush with fresh growth. The ocean was full with dolphins and whales and everything else that belonged to the ocean. It was like heaven on Earth. No matter where we looked it was the same.
The difference being, there were no more tall buildings, no sick people, the ash ground was now an earthy umber. The smog in the air was gone and replaced with clean air that gently blew across the land. It was magical and we didn't know how and didn't ask, but we did know that Mother was smiling once again.
