"Creative Writing VS Talented Writing" ** Image ID #2049085 Unavailable ** January 2 prompt 30 day blogging challenge "Isaac Asimov, born on this day in 1920, once said "Writing, to me, is simply thinking through my fingers." What are your thoughts on this quote? Is writing simply a brain-to-hand exercise, or is there more involved?" it's no wonder I never care much for Isaac Asimov if that's how he felt about writing. There is a huge difference between talent and skill. A talented writer is one to whom writing comes naturally. The words simply flow from them. If they didn't write the words they would speak them. If they never made a dime writing,, they'd continue to do so anyway because to them writing isn't a job. It's a passion. It's a career. To use the motto of the U.. S. Navy "It's an adventure!" Some people write simply because they read something written by somebody famous and saw dollar signs. They thought they'd go to school, "master" the art of writing and try to become famous themselves. Some such as Asimov, actually succeed in doing so. Yet when one tries to read anything they've written it is mechanical and not at all natural. I have yet to write anything for which I have ever used an outline. Those who are trained to write use outlines so that they know before their story even begins how it is going to end. I know how my stories are going to end when I finish writing them.I may have a general idea but I never know what plot twists are going to come up for my characters. I may have character rocketing across the sky in a jet doing mach 2.5 or the same character may be rocketing across the sky doing mach 2.5, take a buzzard through the intake, go into an flat spin from which they can't recover, and die in the ejection.I never know until almost the moment I type it. I had a "Creative Writing" teacher force me to write and follow an outline for a story once. I got an F on it. She knew there was a serious problem because giving me an F in writing was almost as unheard as giving God an F in holiness. So she let me do iit my way and i got an A+. The difference in merely being a writer and being exceptional is talent. Talent cannot be trained no matter how long one learns. |
