Personal Notation:
This is definitely a nostalgic song for me. There is nothing relateable to me with this song other than the fact that it makes me happy when I hear it. I like the rhythm and group feel of the song; it makes me want to get up and dance.

Background:
The Foundations were a diverse cultural group as you can see from the list of musicians. Unfortunately they had a lot of contention in the group, members leaving and new ones taking over. I think this ultimately led to the demise of the group around 1970. Mike D'Abo, one of the writers was once lead singer of Manfred Mann. The other writer, Macaulay was a successful songwriter who wrote another foundation hit, "Baby Now That I've Found You" as well as other songs for The Hollies, Andy Williams, and The New Seekers.

The song was writte in 1968 and featured in the 1998 film, "There's Something About Mary." It was again featured in the 2001 pilot episode of a spy drama, "Alias, Truth Be Told."

The Foundations were a British Soul Band who were active between 1967-1970. Build Me Up Buttercup was #3 on Billboard Hot 100 and #1 in Canada. The song is about a man who is in love with someone who doesn't return love in the same way. The man pleads for this woman's love even though she treats him very badly, never showing up when she says she will. He constantly sits and waits for her although he knows in his heart, her love is untrue. Has a doo-wop feeling to it.

The group was originally called Ramong Sound and they played in Bayswater, London in January 1967 in The Butterfield Club where they also cooked and cleaned.

Around 1970, the group recorded two more singles and then broke up.

Build Me Up Buttercup
Why do you build me up (build me up) buttercup, baby
Just to let me down (let me down) and mess me around
And then worst of all (worst of all) you never call, baby
When you say you will (say you will) but I love you still
I need you (I need you) more than anyone, darlin'
You know that I have from the start
So build me up (build me up) buttercup, don't break my heart

"I'll be over at ten", you told me time and again
But you're late, I wait around and then (bah-dah-dah)
I went to the door, I can't take any more
It's not you, you let me down again

baby, baby, try to find
(Hey, hey, hey!) a little time and I'll make you mine
(Hey, hey, hey!) I'll be home
I'll be beside the phone waiting for you
Ooo-oo-ooo, ooo-oo-ooo

Why do you build me up (build me up) buttercup, baby
Just to let me down (let me down) and mess me around
And then worst of all (worst of all) you never call, baby
When you say you will (say you will) but I love you still
I need you (I need you) more than anyone, darlin'
You know that I have from the start
So build me up (build me up) Buttercup, don't break my heart

You were my toy but I could be the boy you adore
If you'd just let me know (bah-dah-dah)
Although you're untrue, I'm attracted to you all the more
Why do I need you so

baby, baby, try to find

I-I-I need you-oo-oo more than anyone, baby
You know that I have from the start
So build me up (build me up) buttercup, don't break my heart
