Perfect assholes...

Activists can be narrow minded and in their search for perfection... utter assholes. In response to an article, linked by my friend Camille, pointing out this out I responded:

"When Bush was president, I said that I'd be glad to have him as a neighbor (just not in the White House). When gay men gather and bash opponents they don't know I cringe; at one meeting I blew up after they called someone names. Growing up being called names doesn't justify name-calling. When certain on-line vigilantes show outrage I've spoken up with "is that your white privilege showing...". I warn vegans that traveling demands a certain flexibility and respect for the culture one is visiting. And on and on and on. I tell people that I'm highly opinionated... but... I'm not always right. I think the article speaks to embracing the other, being flexible, maybe even humble. For everyone to move forward we needs imperfect friends and allies... even if they appear to have been our enemies in another context."
