Piggy Back Memories ~Prompt two~week one~616 words
Summer holidays! School is out! The first week was spent sleeping in and staying up late. Mom was going to be home for the weekend because she only worked weekdays in the summer. She always had some wonderful plan for us kids. Blueberry pancakes with maple syrup was my favorite! That soft white powdered sugar would fall to perfection landed and dissolving on the stacked plate.

“Well kids, the count down is on. Dad is off for two weeks and the trailer is ready to go!” Her face would light because Mom was all about fun. I would watch her wash and pack clothes, pack the food, bedding and snacks for the road.

“When mom? When are we leaving?” My little brother would hang on the dress tales of mom’s clothes and not give up until he had his answer.

“Two more sleep Glenn, then we are off.”

His face would grow into a pout because two sleeps was a long time for four year old.

“Carolyn, honey, keep your brother busy today so I can get things done.” Sure it was always me who looked after my little brother. I hated it! Well back then I hated it. Now they are treasured memories.

I would take him to the park and push him on the swings. Let him play in mud castles while I sat and day dream about camp and my friends I would see again.

The first day of camp was just setting up and us kids would only be in the way, so mom would have our towels ready to go swimming while dad unpacked.

We couldn’t wait for things to be set up so our first night around the fire could begin. Marsh mellows on the best stick you could find. Dad would sharpen the end so we could stock pile.

Our two weeks at camp were the best child hood dreams for me. There were days that everyone would gather at the beach and we would have games. The best one was the piggy back race. We would start at the shore and have your chosen partner to be on your back. Then we would race to the end of the dock in the water and who ever fell first had to get back to the beginning and be the one on the back of another.

I would be on dad’s back and it was the most fun. I felt high in the sky and he was so strong as he pushed through the water. I knew if I was to fall it would be the best fall ever. He was tall and I would go right under the water feeling like a scuba diver. Everyone wanted to be on the back of dad. I remember fighting over it with the other kids.

My older brother would give me piggy back rides on hill by the park where there were apple trees. He would hold me and I would pick the apples. We would eat some and the ones that were rotting we would use for targets. An apple basket turned on it’s side. We would aim and whoever had the most apples won.

Memories of piggy back rides are the best child hood dream. My grandfather would come and visit and get down on his hands and knees and we each would take turns being the cowboy and him the horse. Bouncing us all around the house and once we got to the bedroom he would stand up and let us fall into the soft blankets and pillows.

This prompt really took me back and what a wonderful thing to go back in time, to giggles and carefree moments.
