Sand.. That was all Kelsey could feel through her fingers, very hot sand. She tried to open her eyes but she couldn’t. Her lips were so dry they stuck together from peeling chapped skin. Her thoughts were slow and she spent a good few minutes trying to regain herself. Slowly she opened her eyes to the brightness of a full blown afternoon sun. Waves splashing at her feet pushing her skirt up over her waist.

She looked around and saw nothing or nobody else. How she got here was still a mystery but she had to get up. Slowly Kelsey balanced herself and leaned onto a piece of drift wood that was more of a petrified tree. Her back felt heavy and that’s when she realized she still had her a back pack on. Water! There had to be water in there. She hurried into the bag and yes! There was water but only water and a compass. Why would she pack these two things?

Gazing around the perimeter her eyes caught an arrow. It was a direction sign to a trail. Okay she thought, This has to be the way out. She wanted to guzzle the water down but knew it had to be savoured for some time. Slow sips and a little trickle down her neck to cool herself off before she put her back pack back on her back and slowly made her way to the trail.

There had to be an explanation for all of this. She and her husband came here for their anniversary. Five years to celebrate their devoted love. Kelsey wasn’t even sure how long she had been here but it had to be a day or two, the way her body felt. The last thing she remembered was the party on a beach. She grew very tired and kissed her husband good night.

“Yes darling, I know you must be tired. It’s been a long day but never fear, I am full of surprises! Our vacations has only just begun.”

In remembering this, Kelsey couldn’t figure out what happened. How did she get here to an island with nobody else on it. There was no boat or foot prints of another. Now she was worried for her husband. What happened to him and how was she going to get out of this mess?! Panic had settled in her chest as she made her way past the arrow and into the darkness of trees and umber. Sounds urging her to look around but not able to see anything but her own hands in front of her. Stumbling on twigs and fallen brush making her breathless.

It had felt as though she was here for ever, trapped in an unknown space. I tiny space on the map that nobody would know about. She struggled with moving on until a snake slithered in her path causing her to run. Tears streamed down her face mixed with filth. She could taste the salt from her brow mixed with sand. A note was plainly stuck to a tree. Plain as day. Kelsey grew excited and sat down to get more water while she read the note.

Darling,

Don’t you just love surprises? I wanted this to be a special day for us so this little adventure will lead you straight into my arms. I have something waiting for you. Don’t forget your compass because now you are going to head east.

See you soon my love, my treasure for keeps.

Kelsey re read this note over and over because she thought something horrible happened to her and her husband, but realized that he did this! Why would he want to put her through this living hell? Questions she could answer made her dizzy in the head. She took out her compass and found her way heading east. The trees weren’t as thick allowing some sun to filter through lighting up the dark pathway. She was tired and wanted nothing more than to shower and sleep for days. This wasn’t a vacation anymore, it was more of a head game of sorts. Her thoughts were interrupted by a helicopter that seemed to be landing or leaving she couldn’t be sure. She had to be close to her destination.

It felt like hours but as Kelsey came around a bed she found an opening. There was no surrounding water so she knew she was still somewhere on the island. How big was this place? There was a house! A glass house? How can that be? Her husband was sitting a table for two wearing a smile.

“You made it! I am impressed. I knew I didn’t marry any dummy. Come sit, you must be ravished.”

Kelsey didn’t know what to make of anything. Her husband didn’t seem like the same person.

“Lance? What’s going on? This isn’t like you.” She reached for him but he pulled back.

“You don’t know me at all. You thought you did and I thought our marriage would fail. I can’t lose you Kelsey. This will be your new home. Do you like it?”

“It’s a deserted island Lance. How?..”

“Only deserted for others. I know where it is. You will live here and I will keep you safe. You have everything you need and we will see each other frequently. I will lavish you will gifts each week when I visit. You will never leave love, you are mine for keeps.”

Kelsey panicked and started to run but ran into an invisible fence.

“Darling you can spend the rest of your life trying to escape or you can appreciate the gift. Happy Anniversary Love.”

Kelsey had no words. She married a crazy man.
