Prompt #1 for week 4/1000 words
Instinct

Walking in the streets of L.A. was something Josie and her boyfriend wanted to do for some time. Sitting in the hotel room that they booked for a week, they prepared themselves for a night on the town.

“Don't you just love the city lights from this view?”

Her boyfriend Reg was sitting by the window admiring the night time. The electric feel it gave him. Both are from a small town and they didn't have much to do as far as night fun. This would be their weekend of a life time.

“Are you nervous?” Josie was so excited but on the other hand being in such a large city made her a bit nervous.

“Nah, we will be fine. Just stick to the crowds and don't wonder off on your own. We can go to the casino and grab a bite to eat maybe.” As he eyed up Josie in her outfit he had to wonder if it was bit too much. She was beautiful and looked innocent, but her top showed a little too much for his liking.

“Josie, can you maybe change that top? It literally bares a lot.”

“Oh are you jealous all of a sudden?”

“No not jealous. I just don't want some guy making a move on you. This place is crawling with weirdos ya know.”

“Fine I will wear a sweater.” She giggled because she liked this about Reg. He was so protective.

Once outside they started to walk up the Blvd. And saw a few interesting characters. Some were dressed like women and they were men. Some were passed out on the side of the road. Mass of people everywhere. This alone was entertaining to both of them.

There were so many ways to get to the hotel that the two thought they could take their time on another route. What they didn't realize was they actually walked into a bad neighborhood and were actually lost.

“I told you we should have stuck to the main streets.” Reg should have gained control and insisted they play it safe. Josie on the other hand wanted to meander around the beaten road sides. She had a wild streak and this he knew.

“Okay so I was wrong. What do you want me to do? We will turn around and trace our steps. At some point we have to end up where we started. Right?” Her voice sounded a bit frightened and she knew herself she was out of her league on this one.

“I think the best thing to do is to call a cab. I know it will cost us but I would rather spend money on our safety than to be stuck out here. There are gangs and people who would do anything for a bit of cash.”

Just as Reg said this a couple of young punks stepped right out in front of them. “Evening peeps! I take it you aren't from around here. Tourists.” He laughed and nudged his buddy beside them. They both started to laugh as one pulled out a small knife.

“Pretty sure you have something I want. A little cash maybe. Jewelry, or credit cards. We'll take what you have, how about that?”

Josie being the more daring of the two stepped forward. “I am not giving you a damn thing. How old are you anyway? You don't look any more than sixteen.”

She tried to walk by the two but one grabbed her, swinging her around to face Reg. He held the knife to her neck.

“Feisty one isn't she? Your lucky buddy. She is a knock out, but has a big mouth. It would take one stroke or jab with this knife and she is toast. Really is that what you want?”

“Um no. No please don't..”

A cab pulled up to the curb and stopped suddenly “Is there a problem here? You folks need a ride? You can't be too careful in this part of town. If you are tourists it's best to stick to the main streets.”

Reg saw this as their only hope. “Yeah your right. We kind of walked off the main streets and now we are lost. C'mon Josie, let's go.”

“Cabby, take your leave man. Peace out and bounce. This doesn't concern you.” The punk moved in closer to Josie and he was sweating at the brow.

The cab driver tried to get out slowly and Reg noticed he had a pistol. He wasn't sure what was going to happen but he was afraid for their lives.

“Listen kid, take this. He tossed to Reg's feet. Don't lose control and do something foolish. I'm outta here. Keep it real man.”

Reg couldn't believe the guy just left like that. Maybe he would get the cops or some sort of help. He had to stay with it and gain control.

The punk who had Josie squeezed her tight that left her crying out. “Many you ain't goin to use that thing. Where are you from anyway? No sense fighting it, just hand over the money.”

“Sure hand over the money and what? You still hurt my girlfriend and you get away with it? I have moral man. I live on a farm. I only shoot something if I'm going to eat it. You don't look that appetizing. You let her go and we walk away. End of story.”

“Dude your not listening! You aren't going anywhere. Your morals are just that. Keep them at the farm. I rule this street and what you have is mine for keeps. Hell maybe I will keep your girlfriend too.”

Josie couldn't take it anymore. The ignorance and throwing around words that weren't going to help them. “Reg! Stuff your morals! We are the good guys!” At that very minute Reg pulled the trigger and hit the guy right in the knee. He went down hard. Hard enough to let go of Josie who grabbed the knife right away.
