Little Lost Soul

A sestina for a child without parents and reason to adopt

Something was missing in his eyes,
his little heart broken; a lost soul.
Envy of others who share that love
the unconditional kind from a mom and dad
with a consoling touch of a mother's hand.
He dreams of what he could have;
his eyes are filled with all his fears

How does he face his fears?
The unknown vanishes from his eyes.
He needs a mom to hold his hand,
A child should never be a lost soul.
Everyone needs a mom and a dad,
a life filled of happiness and love.

I want to give him all of my love,
something all children should have.
As though I were his mom and dad
wiping the tears from his saddened eyes,
this little person a dear little soul
just wants what most already have.

My own emptiness would love to have
the same yearning of a child's love.
After losing my own sweet little soul
together we could face our fears
putting hope back in his eyes.
I could be his mom and dad.

A role of both mom and dad
and I truly would love to have
this beautiful boy 'n his blue eyes,
fill them with laughter and love.
Taking away all of his fears;
I could nurture this little soul.

Fill the void of my own empty soul
Could I be his mom and dad?
There will be doubt and fears;
but together we will hold hands
bringing back a twinkle in our eyes.


A broken heart-a mother's hand
Unconditional love
facing our fears with smiling eyes.


The sestina is a strict ordered form of poetry, dating back to twelfth century French troubadours. It consists of six six-line (sestets) stanzas followed by a three-line envoy. Rather than use a rhyme scheme, the six ending words of the first stanza are repeated as the ending words of the other five stanzas in a set pattern. The envoy uses two of the ending words per line, again in a set pattern.
