In the Darkness Before the Dawn

In the darkness before the dawn,
I listen to civilization's song;
on the express way a siren blares,
in the apartment courtyard someone swears.

In the darkness before the dawn,
I wonder if the city woke me with it's song,
or did a dream shake me awake,
like the rolling of a half-remember earthquake.

In the darkness before the dawn,
I pick up my smart phone and open an app
to access the prayer and scriptures
I regularly read,
without having to turn on a light to see.

In the darkness before the dawn,
I can fix my gaze upon the Lord
before my workday has even begun.
