What the World Needs Now …

I listen to Dionne’s great song –
“The world needs love.” That can’t be wrong
and yet it rings untrue to me.
What the world needs now is honesty.

Somehow I don’t think love's the answer;
lies invade our lives like cancer
breeding in us deep mistrust,
where every action seems unjust.

They say a house that’s built on sand
won’t stay the storm nor will it stand.
Secrets, half-truths, misinformation
undermine our strong foundation.

Our leaders lie and then proclaim
the left-wing media’s to blame,
then justify unthinking acts
with so-called “alternative facts.”

This trickles down to you and me
where neither of us cares to see
or understand the bonds we share.
In isolation, we don’t care.

The Constitution says it best –
“We the People” are the test,
the final voice that must be heard
if this cancer‘s to be cured.

So put your selfishness aside;
let us unite and not divide
Together we can proudly say,
“Each day’s our independence day!”
