Outside My Window

Outside my window
it's beginning to look like spring
as the morning sun transforms
the black silk of night
into the blue hue of day.

Outside my window
the sparrows are building nests
in each unoccupied tree,
while the neighborhood cats watch
making not of each nest site.

Outside my window
no wind disturbs the litter
of civilization;
clouds are gathering:
Do they promise rain?
