Why Walls?
The house on Jane Street
had a small cement yard with three walls:
wooden, wire, and one with a gate.
You could still hear
the sharp shatter of broken glass
when the neighbors raged.
Sometimes the rain
carried the shadow sound of race music
from a radio by an open window.
You could pass through the gate
by an alleyway,
a birth canal
to a different street.
Truth was spoken there, too.
Why don't we know
that walls are liars,
veils of illusion and protection?
Our souls abhor a border.
