Environmental Upheaval

A rodent,
silent and cheerful,
ignores the possibility
of environmental upheaval
until its final moments,
when it is too late
to find the optimum solution.

Than,
like the ceramic rat it is,
it chooses hibernation:
withdrawal into the unscientific
and dogmatic superstitions
of an outdated belief system.

Meanwhile,
the arrow of time moves forward
carrying humanity
into an unknown
and terrifying future.

Is it too late
to prevent environmental upheaval?

Will humankind witness
its own excruciating
death throws,
as Mother Earth
becomes uninhabitable?

Do the computations show
that there is still time
for the human race to unite
in a project
to save the environment?
