Shared Scars
Shared Scars

My Grandmother
had a scar on her right leg.

When she
and her sister,
Ida,
were children,
they rode a blind horse to school.

One day
they weren't watching
where the horse
was going,
and it walked into a barbed wire fence.

I have a scar
on the ring finger of my right hand.

When I was a child,
there was a swing in Grandma's yard,
that hung in front
of a wire clothesline strung
between the house
and the garage.

Charlot,
my cousin,
has an identical scar.

Females,
we share our scars
and our memories
in quiet moments.

Poet's Note:

Attached to the clothesline,
was a thin wire
with a sharp hooked point.

One day
I was playing on the swing,
and decided to play Jane.

I grabbed the wire with both hands,
slide down it,
and tore open the finger
on my right hand.
