The doll
When I first laid eyes on her, I thought she was the best present ever.

My father came home early for my tenth anniversary, in his hands a box wrapped in beautiful red, shiny paper with a ribbon attached.

“So, my little princess," his voice warm and tender, “this one is for you, but you can't open it; immediately after we have dinner, it's yours.”

We ate a lovely meal, specially made for me, french fries and a burger, with some sweet applesauce, my favorite. But I never tasted it, since I could see the package on the side table, waiting for me to open it.

“Okay, since you don't have much of an appetite, let's open your present now,” he laughed and handed me the box.

Within seconds I tore down the paper to find the most beautiful funny doll I had ever seen inside.

She was tanned, with big brown eyes and a smile on her china face. Short curly hair and a blue and white outfit. She was lovely. I fell for her in an instant.

That evening I slept for the first time with my beautiful doll next to me.
I called her Monica.

The next few weeks, Monica and I were inseparable. I took her with me to school; she sat next to me when I had friends over to play, and every night I tucked her in my bed. We were delighted.

Then, one day things started to change.

I got headaches, and my head hurt. First, a little bit, in a short while, it started to affect my days. Dad let me stay at home for a few days, and I was in bed, alone with only Monica beside me.

That's when I started to hear her voice inside my head.

She spoke sweet words of comfort; she sang me some lullabies, so I fell asleep. And she warned me of my dad.

“He is no good, you see,” she said to me. “Look, he left you all alone in your bed. He is gone to work; why isn't he here to take care of you?”

She got angry with my dad, and so did I.

Until one night, we got out of bed. I went to the kitchen and took a knife out of the drawer. I then walked slowly toward my dad's bedroom.

I stabbed my dad with the knife. His blood made the sheets all red.

Monica and I talked about this, and we agreed. Dad was bad.

Then I sat down in the corner of the room. Monica beside me. She smiled her beautiful smile.

When they found us the next morning, we were both still asleep.
