Theme(s): Abuse of power, coming of age, corruption, effects of the past, family, fear of failure, need for change, price of progress, war; The effects of war on individuals, national and social identity, loss of friends and family Resolution: Sebastian hears that his foster brother Oscar is challenged to a duel. He knows Oscar is either a terrible shot or unwilling to take a man’s life, so he leaves the battle he’s supposed to orchestrate to intervene. Unfortunately, he arrives too late. Oscar is fatally wounded and dies in Sebastian’s arms. Sebastian begins to reevaluate what the war has cost him and how it has affected him mentally and emotionally. He figuratively steps back to think about how others went through a similar revelation. In the end, he decides to end the war and gives the throne to his foster sister Suzanna. Suzanna, with her lover and confidant (an Esnorh rebel spy) at her side, begins to redistribute land claimed by the Empire. Sebastian makes peace with his biological brother Augustine, who gives him the task of running the first orphanage in Wesnorh. |
