Seat 34B (Hourglass Day 0)
He waited and waited to get on. Almost last in line, he walked down the runway then the aisle. Oriole knew his seat was far in the back... 15, 20, 25, 30. 34B ... and in the middle. There was no room for his bag. But it fit below with help from his seatmates. He closed his eyes, gripped the arm rests, remembering what she had told him. Breathe. — Is this your first time? He nodded. — Not to worry unless we crash. Oriole opened his eyes — and then there's nothing left to worry about! The older women to his right grinned and patted his hand. — I've flown at least 50 times. Never crashed. Yet. Just breathe. Once we are in the air it'll all be fine. No bad weather forecast today. I always check. She winked. Oriole couldn't help but smile wanly. — Here's some gum. It distracts you. After the steward made his announcement in a sweet voice, Oriole tried to relax, enjoying the spearmint, then gripped harder when the plane began to move.
